Season 2 of the Olympic 5 A Side Football Championship kicked off at the Yaba College of Technology Sports Complex on Tuesday. The Lagos qualifier witnessed over 134 teams registering for the competition.
After a rigorous screening process, 64 teams qualified for the first round of the tournament. The tournament, played on a knock out basis, saw a fixture organised by the LOC for the tournament and supervised by the Lagos State Football Association (LSFA).
After a two-day hard fought, pulsating and fast-paced football, enjoyed by the capacity crowd at the Yaba College of Technology Sports Complex, Moving Train FC and Yaba Tech 1 FC qualified for the finals.
At the finals, Moving Train FC defeated Yaba Tech1(1-0). Moving Train FC's attacking player Junior Giwa also emerged the MVP of the tournament after scoring 7 goals to win the coveted Olympic MVP trophy.
Speaking further on the timetable for the championship, Head of the LOC Fred Taiwo Agbi and CEO of Intusports Nigeria, stated that the Olympic 5 A Side Football train now moves to Kano to determine the team that will be representing that city at the finals coming up at the Campos Mini Stadium in Lagos.
Winners of the championship will win N1m, the runner up N500,000 and the third placed team N300,000. The overall MVP for the tournament will get N300,000 cash prize, a trophy and the opportunity to enjoy a match day experience at the Etihad Stadium, home of Manchester City FC in England.
Fred also said that the 16 teams that will qualify for the National Finals at the Campos Mini Stadium in Lagos in January, will win a full kit, compliment of the sponsors Olympic and the Official Kit partners for the the championship TMS UK.
