Atletico Madrid dumped Barcelona out of this season’s UEFA Champions League after winning 2-0 to go through 3-2 on aggregate in their quarter-final tie.
Barcelona thus became yet another defending champion unable to retain their title.
Antoine Griezman’s brace secured the win for Atletico.
Gabi came close to give Atletico the lead in the 3rd minute but his left strike went inches wide.
In the 7th minute Antoine Griezman headed a cross towards goal which Ter stegen saved.
Jordi Alba recovered quickly to clear away Atletico’s attack.
Barcelona had a free-kick close to the area on 33 minutes but Messi’s effort went over the bar.
Atletico finally opened the scoring on 36 minutes through Griezman who headed in Saul’s superb cross.
In the 42nd minute Neymar saw his curler saved by Oblak.
On resumption, Atletico almost doubled their lead in the 51st minute following koke’s cutback which was cleared away by the barcelona defence.
In the 59th minute Pique couldn’t direct Alba’s cross towards target.
Goal scorer Griezman broke away on a counter but he hit a weak shot which was claimed by Ter Stegen.
On 66 minutes Suarez turned his marker inside Atletico’s 18 but shot straight at Oblak.
Oblak quickly came off his line to punch away a Barcelona cross on 75 minutes.
Suarez almost brought Barcelona level in the 84th minute but Oblak went down quickly to make a save.
Griezman grabbed his double from the penalty spot in the 88th minute after Iniesta handled the ball inside the 18-yard box.
Messi almost made it 2-1 in the added time but his free-kick went inches over the bar.
In the other semi-final, Bayern Munich advance into the semi-final after playing 2-2 against Benfica.
They go through 3-2 on aggregate after winning the first leg 1-0.
Raul jimenez and Talisca scored for Benfica while Arturo Vidal and Thomas Mueller were on target for Bayern Munich.
