Europa: Liverpool Hold Dortmund As Sevilla, Shakhtar Win Away

Belgian striker Divock Origi scored his first Europa League goal of the season for Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool who drew 1-1 away at Borussia Dortmund in Thursday’s quarter-final first leg at the Signal Iduna Park.

The match which saw Klopp return to his former club for the first time since his seven-year stint came to an end last summer came to life when Origi pounced on a flicked header from Jordan Henderson and latched on a shot which took a slight deflection off Bender on its way in the 36th minute of the encounter.

The Belgian had a chance to bag a first half brace but was denied by the on rushing Dortmund Weidenfeller.

At the restart of the second half, skipper Matt Hummels powered home Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s cross past Simon Mingolet to restore parity for the hosts.

In the other fixtures, four-time winners of the competition Sevilla defeated Athletic Bilbao 2-1 in an intense game at the San Mames stadium.

Goals from Iborra seven minutes from time and another from Kolo Kolodziejczak for the visitors cancelled out Adrian Aduriz’s second half opener in the encounter.

The strike was the Spaniard’s ninth of the campaign and his 32nd goal in all competitions.

Also in Spain, Jakub Brabec scored an important away goal for giant killers Sparta Prague who lost 2-1 to Villarreal at the Estadio El Madrigal.

Cédric Bakambu had scored a third minute opener, his sixth of the Europa League campaign this season, before scores were made even seconds before half time by Brabec.

Bakambu restored his side’s lead in the 67th minute, curling in a shot out of the goalkeeper’s reach and into the corner of the net for his seventh goal in this season’s Europa League and his 19th in all competitions.

In Portugal, Shakhtar Donetsk got a solid result away, defeating Sporting Braga 2-1 to put themselves in the driving seat in the tie.

Yaroslav Rakitskiy scored the only goal of the game. Facundo Ferreyra scored Shakhtar’s second with 15 minutes left to play. Wilson Eduardo however grabbed a consolatory goal for the hosts heading into the second leg.
